18th Century to 19th century PEWTER Signet ring with RAMPANT LION Cat Chiefs Crest MacKintosh clan

18th Century to 19th century PEWTER Signet ring with RAMPANT LION Cat Chiefs Crest MacKintosh clan

This is a stunning and unusual, handmade rare Pewter 18th- 19th century woman or man's Signet ring. I was told Pewter was often cast in earlier signets, before sterling. These rings are very scarce. One person said they believed this ring was from around the Regency period. This wonderful ring has a Rampant Lion cat with a defined skull head, standing guardant and erect in a hostile posture with claws outstretched. Dangerously ungloved forepaws raised in the air in rampant position while treading in larger footsteps. The backward writing on the ring, (when viewed in a mirror) says in English, "Touch not the cat but a glove," underneath is a large, stylized "TG." Seems like a defiant warning from someone.

I was told there are different Rampant Lions or Chief's Crests denoting different branches of connection to a royal family or to an important Scottish Clan, so this ring is Scottish that spoke English. Each clan branch has a different lion and motto in heraldry. Mottoes denote loyalty, strength, and faith, virtue, and courage of the family.

I found out the MacKintosh clan family crest and motto is, "NA BEAN DO'N CHAT GUN LAMHAINN." In English this translates to, "Touch not the cat but a glove." Or, Touch not the cat bota (without) a glove. This motto is a warning to those who would approach a fierce wildcat (implication, a MacKintosh...) in battle when his claws are unsheathed. (Or "ungloved." Seems unwise to me!)

I've had a lovely lady descendent from the The MacKintosh confirm that this antique signet ring is of the early MacKintosh Crest and motto. (Thank you for your wonderful information!) The MacKintosh clan was the head of an entire confederacy of clans around Inverness, Scotland....The whole of Clan Chattan depended on Clan MacKintosh for their protection, and so adopted their motto. This confederacy was (and to this day) called, "Clan Chattan." The MacKintosh were the primarly supporters of Robert Bruce I. For a millennia, the Bruces and MacKintoshes have been particularly loyal to one another. There's many other Surnames regarded as septs (sub-branches) of the MacKintosh clan, such as and including: Keir-Mackintosh, Grey, Steele, ect. A guess of mine might be that someone likely owned this crest with a higher ranking, with a "G" last name, Grey? In all, this is a fabulous ring!

Lucky for the new owner to be, I'm a purist. So, I have not cleaned away any tarnish or cleaned off the old scarlet sealing wax embedded in the fine embossing. (The close-up photo was so close-up that the red is actually much less apparent in person!) We'll leave any desired cleaning for the next owner. Due to condition item is sold "AS IS"

Poor Thanksgiving, sandwiched in between Halloween and Christmas, gets less attention than most any other holiday. If we didn't have turkey and pumpkin pie to look forward to, we'd probably skip right over it. And this is true when it comes to collectibles, too.

My Shameful Confession

Why am I aware of this? Because of the serious lack of Thanksgiving collectibles adorning my home from year to year. I have a potpourri burner from the ‘80s shaped like a bear wearing a pilgrim hat, a pair of really cheesy turkey salt and pepper shakers of the same vintage, and a brand new cornucopia filled with pretty, albeit fake, leaves and berries.

The pilgrim potpourri bear, although out of style functionally, is just too cute to get rid of. And, I’m predicting that unusual potpourri burners will be collectible at some point in the future, so I might be happy I like it so much one of these days.

I also have a vintage plate decorated with a very regal looking turkey, which I finally managed to find and stick on a plate stand when I put the Halloween decorations away this year. I also found some of my Thanksgiving postcards , and put those out on display. My mother’s turkey platter is around here somewhere, and I might manage to locate it before it’s time to put this stuff away to make room for Santa’s arrival.

Honestly, I’m doing a little better in the Thanksgiving decorating department in comparison to years past, but it’s still pretty pathetic.

A Puzzling Situation in Pamela’s Household

The thing that really puzzles me from year to year is why I haven’t found a really nice pair of vintage salt and pepper shakers to replace those ugly turkeys. I’m still neglecting Thanksgiving, that’s why.

Sure, I had the house all decked out for Halloween with a mixture of old and new and in between. I most always add something to my stash of spooky collections each year, even if it’s just a postcard or two.

Very soon I’ll haul out all my Christmas decorations and merrily deck the halls with cowboy Santas (I live in Texas, remember?) and all the holiday fanfare that goes along with them. But in the meantime, I have to deal with my Thanksgiving neglect.

I used to know I was in trouble when I packed up the Halloween stuff at the beginning of November and brought my paltry Thanksgiving offerings. My ex-husband would look at me curiously and say, “That’s it? That's just pitiful!” My significant other of late didn’t have quite the same reaction, but he hasn’t experienced a Christmas with me yet. I’m letting him pace himself.

Of course, I always figured with my ex-husband that if a regular old man noticed a severe lack of décor, I knew I was in trouble. He never went as far as telling me I needed to buy something. I never needed encouragement in that department. But, I got the hint just the same, and always thought I’d rectify the situation at some point.

Once Again, a Plan of Attack

First on my list will be to locate Mom’s turkey platter. It’s a fitting tribute to someone who prepared so many wonderful Thanksgiving dinners, and taught me how to continue the tradition. Sounds simple, but properly displayed that's actually a really nice addition to the decorating mix.

Next stop, the antique mall where I have a few things for sale. At the very least, I’m still hoping to buy a charming pair of turkey shakers with some age on them. If I don’t have any luck there, they always have a big flea market style antique show in Austin just after Thanksgiving, so there's indeed hope. Maybe I’ll even find some cute pilgrims to go with them, although given my track record with Thanksgiving collectibles that might be a tad ambitious.

Relegating Some of the Blame

Of course, I can’t take all the blame for giving Thanksgiving decorating less than proper respect. Even before the Halloween stuff came down in the stores, the Christmas goodies magically popped up everywhere.

I might be fighting a losing battle, but I’m still going to do my best to right this wrong and give Thanksgiving its due respect. After all, pausing to truly celebrate Thanksgiving is a way to acknowledge the blessings my collecting hobby continually brings into my life and home.

While open for the annual Taylor Christmas home tour, much to the delight of visitors wandering through the spectacularly decorated home, a tabletop tree that really epitomizes this idea was on display.

This particular tree held bough upon bough filled with small china cups Claire had collected here and there and everywhere. Some were children's dishes; others were of the demitasse variety. A lidless child's teapot, tied in place with a satin ribbon, was even perched near the tip of the tree where it worked beautifully as a topper.

Among the lightly colored cups, which really showed nicely nestled among the greenery, inexpensive red bead garland and sprigs of dried babies breath added the finishing touches. The result was a beautiful, old-fashioned tree allowing $1-3 cups to be used in a creative and fun holiday display with out going into debt to put it together.

Baby Shoes and Children's Toys on the Tree

While we were talking about her own decorating work, Claire also told me about an irresistible tree she'd seen once filled with adorable vintage baby shoes. And then we discussed toy rolling pins tied on with ribbons. The list went on and on when we started exploring kid's stuff to use as holiday ornaments.

Now, if you don't have a bunch of odd cups or infant shoes already collected up, these same ideas aren't going to work for you this holiday season. You'll have to get busy transforming common objects you already own into uncommon ornaments before Santa makes another trek down the chimney.
