At this carnival, however, you wash down corn dogs with $14 blue-cotton-candy martinis, and the carnies barking out “Step right up, folks” look more like recent N.Y.U. sociology graduates than ex-cons.

“It’s like a cross between Circus Circus and the Boardwalk at the Jersey Shore,” said Rudy Temiz, 31, an electronics retailer who had just won two goldfish and three plush toys, and was enjoying a drink with a friend.

At first glance, such a splashy approach to after-hours fun seems at odds with the recessionary era in night life, where conventional wisdom has it that low-key is the new black. But with its emphasis on participatory fun, Carnival at Bowlmor Lanes is keeping with the move toward interactive night life.

Nightcrawlers who are weary of Club Row haunts offering little more than $400 bottle service and tedious electronica beats often drop the attitude — well, some of it — and settle in for a night of table tennis among the celebrities at SPiN New York (co-owned by Susan Sarandon) in the Flatiron district, martini-fueled gutterballs at Lucky Strike Lanes & Lounge on West 42nd or miniature golf in a foursome of plaid-shirt types at Bushwick Country Club in Brooklyn. (Carnival’s proprietor, Tom Shannon, was an early adopter. His Bowlmor Lanes bowling alley one floor below has been a magnet for trendy young clubbers for years.)

Particularly in lean times, the thinking goes, people have little patience with velvet ropes and bottles of Grey Goose. What they want is escapism.

“It’s the perfect club for this economy,” said Candice Spano, 23, a hairdresser from Staten Island. “The standard club is everyone sitting around talking and you can’t even hear each other,” she said. “Here, you don’t have to entertain each other. Here, you get entertained.”

THE gang’s nickname is still up for grabs.

Four teenage girls and two men suspected of stealing jewelry and clothing from the homes of Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, Orlando Bloom and other celebrities have been tagged with a few tantalizing names since their purported crime spree came to light. “The Burglar Bunch,” trumpeted TMZ. “The Bling Ring,” rhymed The Los Angeles Times. The “Hollywood Hills Burglars,” said the Los Angeles police.

The group, most 18 and 19 years old, used celebrity Web sites, according to investigators, to figure out when their victims — a roster of young Hollywood that also includes Rachel Bilson of “The O.C.,” Ashley Tisdale of “High School Musical” fame and Audrina Patridge of “The Hills”— would be attending premieres and other events and would therefore not be home.

In the stars’ homes, burglars helped themselves to Rolex watches, Louis Vuitton bags and other baubles featured in celebrity magazines, authorities say.

Six accused members of the ring have been charged with residential burglary and other crimes, including one, Alexis Neiers, who was arrested on the set of a reality show pilot she is filming for E! with her sister Tess Taylor, a Playboy model.

The tale lies at the intersection of celebrity, teen culture, reality TV and the Internet. It doesn’t hurt the chances of the — let’s go with “Bling Ring” — becoming the subject of a movie that the teenagers “look like the cast of ‘Twilight,’ ” as one Hollywood lawyer put it.

The six who have been charged are Nicholas Prugo, 19; Diana Tamayo, 19; Courtney Ames, 19; Ms. Neiers, 18; Roy Lopez Jr., 27, a bouncer; and Jonathan Ajar, 28, nightclub promoter. Mr. Ajar faces related drug and weapons charges but has not been charged with burglary.

Another teenager, who police in Los Angeles have said is the ringleader, Rachel Lee, 18, was arrested in Las Vegas and is expected to be charged soon, said Detective Brett Goodkin of the Los Angeles Police Department, the lead investigator in the case.

A search of Ms. Lee’s father’s home in Las Vegas turned up over $20,000, designer jeans and photos of Ms. Hilton, Detective Goodkin said.

Mr. Ajar has pleaded not guilty. The others, whose arraignments are expected in the next few weeks, have not yet entered pleas.

Most of the teenagers knew one another from Calabasas, Calif., an affluent suburb of rolling foothills in the western San Fernando Valley. Although it is more rural than the Hollywood Hills, some 30 minutes away, where many of the celebrity victims live, Calabasas has its share of stars: Will Smith and Kourtney Kardashian from the reality show “Keeping Up With the Kardashians.”

Celebrities — and a celebrity lifestyle — are close enough to reach out and touch, even more so thanks to gossip Web sites that track the nightly antics of young celebutants, and reality shows like “The Hills” that portray beautiful young people, seemingly just like you, living large.

“Young people see a lifestyle on television and have peer pressure and constant bombardment from media to have what other people have, to want what other people want and to try to live the dream,” said Jason Peirce, the host of “Calabasas Teen Forum,” a local cable television program. Police say that some of the stolen bling was fenced for cash, while other items were kept as trophies. Friends of the accused say they wore the stylish clothes and Rolex watches belonging to the stars. In the case of Ms. Hilton’s home, they returned three or four times, authorities said.

The Bling Ring is not a reality show. It is reality, with a wide-ranging cast of characters.

Ms. Lee and Mr. Prugo were classmates at a remedial high school, Indian Hills, to which they transferred because of truancy issues at Calabasas High School, friends said. Ms. Lee, who drove a white Audi A4, was named “best dressed” in the 2007 Indian Hills yearbook. “She dressed very trendy, things like what celebrities wore,” recalled Dani Ley, a classmate. “Everyone would be in jeans and shorts. She would come in fancy jean skirts and fancy tops.”

Friends said that Ms. Lee had trouble at home. Her mother, who had been single for many years, started a relationship that displeased her, said one longtime friend of Ms. Lee’s, who asked that her name not be used to avoid retribution from the Bling Ring. “That’s when she started having problems with her mom,” the friend said.

Ms. Lee’s small house near the high school was sometimes a hangout, where Mr. Prugo, Ms. Ames and others from Indian Hills could be found “having a kickback,” said the friend.

I had quite a clear image in my mind what this dress was going to look like, so it was easy to get the materials that I wanted. I looked quite extensively for crinkled, beaded silk chiffon and came across some very interesting fabrics, but the right one wasn't among them. So in the end I decided for crinkled white silk chiffon without any beading, and purchased the beads myself. The underlayer I imagined was made from china silk, and luckily the week when I went fabric shopping, my favorite shop had a discount on silk. I found the perfect 10mm Habotai and bought a bit more than I usually planned 'cause it wasn't as wide as I hoped. That way, I ended up with 8 metres of beautiful silk. Of course not all went into the gown, I still have about 2 metres left.

It was white, so it had to get the cream tone that I wanted for the underdress. After some experiments with tea and various silk dyes, I had good results with Dylon cold water tea dye. The fabric came out of the dye bath exactly that cream color that I wanted, and the dye was very easy to work with. I dyed by hand in a small container, but you can also use it in a washing machine. So...using my old side-seamed pattern that I took from my Blood Red Dress, I cut the underlayer (had to cheat a bit because the width of the silk required a little seam on the left side from the bottom up to about mid-calf...but better than a center front seam. The back piece has a center seam) and the four chiffon layers. The top layer is only loosely attached to the two other layers by a few stitches. I created a tie by cutting four long pieces of my silk chiffon, sewing two of them with right sides together on three edges and then turn them "inside" out. The open, small end was pinned into the seam of the top layer and sewn down with the fabric. That way, the tie disappears into the waist seam and when it's pulled back and knotted, it pulls the fabric back as well. At the moment, I'm struggling with the cowl neck...this looks easier than it is. I need to find a way to attach it without being bulky... Also, the sleeves are still missing little drapey cowls, and the train will be bag-lined with my leftover silk. That's the last I will do on this dress, 'cause this will be easy. The, the beading can start ;-) Here are some preliminary pictures nevertheless....

Finally, I've found a way to attach the cowl that doesn't look goofy...

The dress is almost finished. The cowl is attached and I've even started beading. I will change my sleeves though for a longer version and solve the 'sagging sleeve' problem at the shoulder with this. I first thought the shoulders had little cowls as well, but it seems it's just a bigger piece of fabric sewn to the dress at the outer corner,so that it sags in the middle...a bit like the neckline of the Dream Dress, if anybody knows what I'm talking about :-)

Nothing new on my dress,just an observation....
I noticed Uma Thurman's dress at the Golden Globes looked a lot like the Bridge Dress..at least the neckline. Still, it reminded me of the Bridge Dress at once. And she looks pretty in white.
