Tyra's the First Lady

Tyracover I am a huge fan of Tyra Banks so I was so delighted to see her on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar’s September issue. I was thinking, when a supermodel like Tyra Banks which turned producer/show host is on the cover of a big fashion magazine, what is she known as: a supermodel or celebrity? We all know how models don’t get to be on the cover of magazines as much in America anymore, so it made me curious.

Now to the politics. I adore how Tyra’s portraying Michelle Obama in this spread and it really connects the upcoming election with fashion. If I took a quick glance at the photos, I would have thought it was Michelle Obama herself!

Although the spread seems very biased, I personally like it, but I can understand why many people would be against this whole editorial because they are supporters of John McCain. It’s funny though how I hear a lot of buzz about Michelle Obama but not as much on Cindy Lou Hensley McCain, John McCain’s wife. I think they are both beautiful, but Obama and his wife are so young and fresh looking. It’ll be very exciting to see the results of the election.

I was asked this question by one of my engineer friends at the university I go to. “Why do women love clothes and shoes so much?” was written all over his expression when he asked me. I replied, “My idea of fashion is not all about the clothes and the makeup, but the excitement and energy that the industry gives off. You see, it’s not just “stuff”.”

I study at a university that has more students majoring in science than any other department, so you can tell that I sometimes (more like all the time) get these kind of questions. I think fashion is exciting for the same reason why engineers are eager when they make better robots and develop faster computers or scientists that are delighted to know that they have a new lead to cure a disease.

Think of all the hard work they do, the impossible people they have to collaborate with, the time spent and finally BOOM! they have one of the best search engines online or a new piece of evidence why brain cells work the way they do. And it all started out with an idea to innovate something, to create something great.

The same goes for fashion. The tremendous thought the designers put into their clothes, models perfecting their struts and poses, photographers taking beautiful pictures, magazines that contribute by putting it in front of customers, and the manufacturers and hair and makeup artists: everybody comes together just to make something a reality. Whether a whole line of clothes or even just one shoe, so many people work hard to make it happen and that’s what I love about fashion.

And fashion isn’t just something girls like, it’s not as silly and insignificant as many people are made to think. I defend the industry because it’s one of the biggest in the market and it supplies thousands of people with jobs. This all helps the economy through the good times and the bad. The fashion industry also donates tons of money to help people around the world.

Fashion is really something. The industry is powerful, influencing, economic, and full of energy which is why I love it so much. I’m not saying scientists and engineers or whoever are boring or worthless either. What I’m trying to say is that I carry the same passion they do except in a different field. And there’s truly nothing wrong with that, as long as you enjoy what you do.

Orlando Pita, a famous hairdresser, is known for his $800 haircuts that he charges in his salon located in New York.

These are all big dollars, but for what exactly? A dress? How about a pair of shoes? Oh wait, maybe a great bag! No. What I’m talking about is the price of a haircut.

The other day I went to a nearby salon for a cut, and I have to admit I’m frugal at times so the bill didn’t even go to $20. (Yes, I know, I’m a cheapo!) Anyway, while researching about haircuts, I find out that the average price of one in America is $21. The most expensive cut I have ever gotten was about $80. And to me anything over $100 is pretty pricey which makes me wonder, what makes a person want to spend over hundreds of dollars on a haircut? Better yet, what pushes a salon to charge such expensive cuts?

Stylists battle about prices all the time, some low, some high. One of the fashion industry’s most famous hairdressers, Orlando Pita, opened a salon in New York with haircuts for $800. He sticks by his price and explains, “My clients really care about their hair. Maybe they don’t pay that kind of money for a pair of shoes or a bag. It’s all relative to what we think is important.” However, other stylists argue that anything over $500 is outrageous.

In my opinion, those that charge a lot are marketing their name and status which makes prices go up, but really the quality of the cut doesn’t change that much when you are comparing expensive ones. As a client, I think you just take pride in who you got your hair cut by and how much you spent on it, which boosts your liking toward your cut. So if you have the money, why not? Many women spend hundreds on shoes that they only wear a few times, so what’s the harm in getting a $600 haircut that will last you months?

I think each person has their own standards, so I feel that there’s nothing wrong with sticking under $100 (like me) and I don’t find an $800 haircut too outrageous either. As long as you feel comfortable in paying the price, I don’t think there’s anything bad about it, and hey, maybe one day I’ll try Orlando Pita’s cut out to see if it’s really that great. (Well, I’m sure it’ll be much much better than the one I got the other day!)

Fashion styles

Although almost every single man or woman is trying to create his or her own original and unique style, we can notice that there are some people who look similar in a way. They prefer a certain style, with some particular rules. The choice of style depends on a person's ideology, friends, his/her way of living and many other things. The style itself represents you, even some attitudes of yours and some of your character features. Let's discuss some of the best known fashion styles.

One of the most fashionable styles at this moment is the EMO style. This trend now circulates between teenagers all over the world. The code EMO actually refers to "emotional", therefore, not only looks are important, but the personality as well. EMO's are usually wearing tight pants and a striped, bright colored shirt. They may also have piercing in such places as lips, septum, tongue or eyebrows. Don't be surprised if you'll notice a boy wearing makeup, it's a part of the style - both boys and girls are wearing lots of it.

Another style is bohemian. It's surely one of the most difficult styles to describe, yet almost everyone could point the person who looks bohemian. Girls are usually wearing long skirts and shaggy blouses. The only way to describe people who prefer bohemian style is to say that they are all original. Their clothes might seem old and worn off, they carry huge bags, but you won't see anybody wearing the same clothes.

Hip hop fashion is surely one of the most popular nowadays, especially among youngsters. Boys commonly wear baggy pants and jumpers. Most of them usually wear various hats and a lot of shinny accessories, colloquially called "bling". Girls, although some of them prefer baggy clothes as well, are more into the sexy style. Short skirts, a lot of nude body and golden accessories are common amongst hip hop girls.

It is important to point out that those styles are commonly noticed between young people. Mature, middle-aged people are as not much into such fashion as the younger generation. Some of them are fallowing up latest trends, others simply dress the way they like and feel comfortable. The only style from this list that can be distinguished among the older folks is probably bohemian. We mean, when have you last seen a 50-year old EMO?

Another style is more like a life style than a fashion style. It's punk style. People dress in jeans and leather jackets all full of metal accessory. They are against society, they rebel against most things society offer, they don't work, don't study. Punks do whatever they want to do. Teenagers like this style because of its idea, but most of them grow up and start living a normal life. Yet there are some who remain punk for the rest of their life.

There is one, easily noticeable but rather rare fashion. It's gothic. Goths cover themselves in black and whiten their faces. People who are into this style are commonly depressed (on the outside) and say that the only reason for living is sorrow. Just as with punks, goths usually lose their style when they mature.

Bring a bling on!

Accessories can present a style, renew boring outfit and accentuate a personality. There have been various types of adornments in history: various necklaces, rings, bracelets, body piercing, but it seems like it’s time for new generation to come. You no longer need to string beads to wear them nor pierce your skin for jewellery. Instead of it, you can simply stick gems on you skin.

Jewellery for skin usage started in about 2000, but it already made its way to popularity. It’s a new way to show creativity and originality. Sticky beads are sold all over the world. You can find various shaped pieces (i.e. rounded, hearts, stars, triangle, flowers shaped, etc.) and apply them to the skin to compose a wanted ornament, or you can buy already designed crystal tattoo.

Crystals for tattoos are not necessarily actual crystals. They can be made out of various materials like glass, plastic, gemstones, noble metals or even precious stones. Plastic and glass pieces are pretty cheap and can be found in most jeweler’s or make-up shops, while beads used in high fashion are made out of more precious elements.

Cet hiver déjà j'avais bénéficié de ces articles à -50% voir -65%, imaginez en plus que ces articles étaient des Isabel Marant ... Cet été je n'ai certe pas trouvé mon bonheur auprès des créateurs mais je me suis entichée des créations de La Redoute comme ce fabuleux Pantalon à Pinces vu et revu sur de nombreux blogs et où chacun a su manier les ensembles et les couleurs, pour moi ça sera tout simple : je le roulotte je rajoute un tee shirt naturel en lin GAP roulotté aux manches (que j'ai aussi en bleu d'ailleurs, j'ai adopté toute la famille) et une paire de compensées naturelles... Ce n'est pas tout, commander qu'un article à la redoute serait un sacrifice à cause des frais de livraison et de traitement (8 euros en tout), j'ai donc commandé aussi une paire de sandales noires de La Redoute Création (-65%), un maillot de bain noir "bandeau" et une combi-short verte kaki qui sera disposible dans 6 semaines (lol), merci la Redoute, là j'ai craqué sur une jupe en lin de chez TopShop, à suivre ...

Accessory Trends for 2009 Summer

Accessory is one of the most important parts in your style. You may wear excessively fashionable clothes but your style will never be complete without the trendiest accessory. Another trendy way to cover your head is a turban. No matter what you're wearing - an evening dress or sport clothes, a turban will definitely make you look good and fashionable. It looks very extraordinary, so be ready for attention.

If you don't like to cover your head with hats, not even talking about turbans, at least gird your head with a wide, fashionable band or rolled scarf.

Waist

All the fashion collections, without any exception emphasize women waist. It's time to stress the most beautiful part of a woman's figure. Various shaped leather belts cope with this task without any problems.

The trendiest ones are the widest ones. However, if you prefer small details - a thin belt with a huge gilded belt-buckle will do perfectly.

Jewelry For Men

A classic watch is undoubtedly a man's single most important fashion accessory. Some more conservative men will go so far as to say that a watch should be the only accessory worn and that anything else is simply superficial and useless.
The modern man, however, can definitely look stylish while wearing a bracelet, chain or ring, as long as he doesn't exaggerate and mimic Dennis Rodman with hundreds of body rings, a dozen chains and a ring on each and every one of his fingers.

So what kind of fashion accessories should men wear in order to look stylish, without looking over-decorated and tacky?

Decorate your neck
Every man needs at least one necklace in his fashion accessory collection. Necklaces should be bold and simple, not multi-colored, clumsy or overweight. Instead, opt for something trendy like a necklace made up of wooden or plain metal beads.

Gold, silver and platinum chains display a classier and more powerful image than beaded or string necklaces. The chain should be medium-sized because if it's too thin and flimsy, it defies the whole purpose of trying to look stylish... and it might also look effeminate. Metal chains
Choose a chain with a medium-sized diameter, made of real metal such as gold, silver or platinum. Avoid fakes because they are pretty obvious and no one likes jewelry with too much luster.
Radiant jewelry is what you may see Liz Taylor wear, or anybody else with a flashy character. Finally, a little tip on how to wear your metal chain: keep it nicely tucked in your shirt. Leaving it hanging outside your shirt is simply tacky and looks childish.

Rings aren't only for weddings
A ring is also a popular accessory for men. Wearing a simple ring can be very elegant and stylish at the same time. But for a few guys, taking the ring off could get you in big trouble!
Besides the good old ring finger on your left hand, you can wear a ring on your pinky finger, your middle finger, or for you more daring guys, your thumb. These days nobody really cares about which finger you wear a ring on, as long as the ring looks good and fits the rest of your outfit.
Simplicity and elegance should be your main guidelines when choosing a ring. Silver rings always look good whether they're plain, combined with black, or mounted with a stone.

High Fashion Elite – Solely for gays?

Men these days become more and more interested in their style comparatively to their interest in vogue one hundred or even twenty years ago. Although considerable part of guys seems to care about their clothes and look, the main customers of fashion market are women. There is a paradoxical situation there: almost all fashion production is dedicated for women, but almost all fashion designers are men. More surprising fact – numerous part of vogue professionals are gay men. It’s not a big sensation as homosexual men are often considered to be related to creative and artistic jobs, but how they took up fashion world? Don’t women know their own style better?

First of all, let’s remember the fact that not long ago main women “job” was to look after children, tidy a house and cook a dinner three times a day. In other words, it was inappropriate for a woman to take other responsibilities than household. Therefore, fashion business as well as all the other jobs was basically taken by men. Those times have passed, women fought for their rights, they proved they are equal or even better than men.

Yet we have surprising situation, approximately 85 percent people trying to enter fashion world are women, but those who achieve big success in haute couture are mostly men. How come females don’t reach the top? Probably they still are considered not to have characteristics and ambitious needed for leadership or as American designer Norma Kamali said “Women still prioritize getting married and having babies”. There were prominent women in the industry as Coco Chanel, Miuccia Prada and Donna Karan, however there were much more men who made an influence.

No matter what stop women from high success in fashion career, there must be something more that brings men, especially gays, to the triumph.

According to psychologists, women better ask a man’s opinion about their look. And also a woman prefers to receive an advice from a man to other female. If a woman can’t be impartial, there are reasons why straight men can’t make objective judgment as well. Everyone has their mind about style, but if a man tells a woman what to wear, he will most likely dress her up to please him. Tokyo Girls Collection

Twice a year, Japan celebrates fashion. Since 2005 the Tokyo Girls Collection (TGC) exposés a unique mix of Tokyo street fashion and music. The models who participate in the event are well known from Japanese fashion magazines. Beside the fashion show, at each Tokyo Girls Collection show a new Miss Tokyo Girl is crowned.

Unlike other fashion events, not only designers and buyers can enter the Tokyo Girls event. The general public is also welcome to enjoy the show and afterwards purchase some of the clothes donated by the models. The show typically attracts crowd of over 22, 000 people.

Many things in our life are happening in cycles. Autumn is changing summer, spring - winter, and this cycle is repeating every year. You can notice the same in fashion world - fashions trends that have been on the top in fashion industry some time ago, suddenly are coming back on the catwalks. This season we can notice how A-line forms appear in various clothes as it was very popular in 60's. It's a return of A-line forms in the fashion world right now.

A-line fashion is a fashion line which was created first time by favorite French designer Christian Dior. The main characteristics of it is a letter A - narrow shoulders and emphasized waist goes to widely flowing skirt.
